Smarter Balanced test delivery software upgrade by Fairway Technologies dramatically increases performance and load capacity.

San Diego, CA September 23, 2016 – San Diego-based Fairway Technologies has released an upgrade to the Smarter Balanced Test Delivery System that dramatically speeds up test delivery and online ramp-up time, while also expanding the number of students able to participate in common core testing at the same time.

In partnership with Smarter Balanced, a public agency responsible for an online assessment system aligned to Common Core State Standards, Fairway’s application improvements significantly increase performance and load capacity.

Previously, the number of students who could concurrently login and take an open-source, online test was 20,000. Typically, the time from the moment students selected an assessment until the first set of test questions appeared was more than 9 seconds while under heavy load.

Enhancements to the application, developed by Fairway Technologies, have reduced this time to less than a second under identical load, hardware, and configuration. “Most importantly, the new release allows for up to 55,000 total concurrent students, a 150 percent increase in capacity,” notes Jeff Treuting, Fairway Director of Software Delivery.

The federally funded Smarter Balanced consortium encompasses 15 states, the Virgin Islands and the Bureau of Indian Education. The SB Practice Test and Training Test provide students with a preview of test questions in English and math for grades 3-8 and high school. More than 7 million students took the 2015 summative assessments,

“We are excited about the performance improvements that we’ve made so far and are hard at work on the next round that will increase capacity even more,” Treuting notes. This upgrade also facilitates movement towards a comprehensive open-source system used by the 15 member states, and potentially more states in the years to come.
